It started with the BBC radio shows, then Douglas Adams wrote them as novels. He wrote 5 of them. If you don't "get" Monty Python style humor, you probably won't grab onto his style right away in the first book. It may take a few minutes to understand as an American, but once you get it, the rest of the series is a breeze and the man was an absolute genius. A computer pioneer, an early game programmer, writer, musician, into science and philosophy. A truly deep and original creative thinker, besides being one of the funniest people ever. He died a few years ago, very young and living quite near here. It will always be one of my deepest regrets that I never got to meet him.

The entire collection is available in book form for like $15 these days. Also get Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and it's sequel: The Long Dark Tea Time of The Soul...two of the funniest books ever written, but at the same time, the most moving and spiritually meaningful if you take the time to understand what he's actually saying. Also, he died before completing his last book..it would have tied these two "universes" together. An obvious progression once you get into hyper-nerd mode about his work, like I have! (Of course, I have everything he ever wrote in hard cover, and everything he ever did on audio, read by the author too. It adds so much insight to hear his inflections after reading his written words...but after years of being a hard-core fan, I had his voice in my head after a while anyway, LOL!)

Anyway, the ONLY way to experience these books if you have the option, is to listen to them on tape in his own voice. He is HYSTERICAL. You will never hear anything funnier, I guarantee you. Everyone I have ever played them for is spoiled for life.
I collected them over the years as he released them that way, and spent hundreds of dollars doing so. Get thee to a library...if you can borrow them on CD definitely do THAT! (I saw Amazon had BBC MPs on CD...don't get those!!! THEY S-U-C-K!! <u>ONLY</u> get read by the author or it's not worth getting an audio version at all!)

Vedy intelesting locketmastah!
I think I saw an enactment of some kind, of Hitchiker's Guide, on PBS many years ago!
Am I barking up the wrong tree? I'm pretty sure that was the title and all I remember about it is that it was out there.
I mean REALLY out there!!!
It was probably over my little yellow head but since the world is about to end and I'm older and "wiser" and all I'm gonna have to check that out! But from the library? Would that be safe? Is it 'patriot Act' friendly?
I sure hope so. I'm bored with Ashcroft's approved reading list!

It started out as the Douglas Adams novels (think I've read 3 or 4 of them, but memory fogs, cause was about the same time I grew fed-up with Steven King). Then it went into a radio program. Finally it was done on a shoestring budget for BBC as a made-for-tv-movie (aka; poor production quality despite a great script, like many of their Dr. Who episodes).

Your Monty Python comparison "lings a berr."
I think that was why I tuned into that PBS showing way back when.
Because I thought the previews looked pythonesque!
Thanks for the info rocketmaster!

I think I'll go and sit in the corner and count the votes for my avatar, Bartholomew... Uhh ...lets see....uh well... I guess I got...almost... Does zero count as nearly a vote. I was really up against some strong competition, I guess that's why I had to vote for the Angel too.

...Peace...

Ella Ella Ella! Under normal circumstances Frets would be in the running in a 'Coolest Avatar' poll. That is just sooooo true!
But this is different. This is a 'CCoolest Avatar' poll and Cherie's Lil' Angel avatar is the CCoolest of the CCool, IMO too!
I really do like your avatar Rog but I love Cherie's
and I voted accordingly!
